Lil’ Heroes Lead the Way at Spring Lake Hope’s 8th Annual Luncheon

Franklin Lakes Event raises over $160,000 for families of children with rare illnesses

Franklin Lakes, NJ – Spring Lake Hope Foundation’s Eighth Annual Gala Luncheon, held at the scenic Indian Trail Club, brought together a compassionate community to celebrate the courage and resilience of the foundation’s beloved “Lil’ Heroes.” Hundreds turned out for this inspiring gathering, including football legends Bart Oates and Ottis Anderson, Fox News contributor, Joe Concha, and 101.5 FM morning drive host Bill Spadea. Presented by Provident Bank and Psychotherapy Care Center, this event honored children battling rare illnesses and raised over $160,000 to support their essential medical needs. Concha, who was recently appointed to the foundation’s Honorary Board of Advisors, served as host, warmly welcoming guests before passing the spotlight to the foundation’s President and CEO Paulette Laurenzi, who expressed heartfelt gratitude to the gala committee, sponsors, and attendees.

“This event would not be possible without the unwavering support of our community, and today, we honor the children and celebrate the generosity that surrounds them,” she shared.

The luncheon shone a spotlight on the incredible stories of Spring Lake Hope’s “Lil’ Heroes,” each child facing rare challenges with inspiring strength:

Gwenyth Ross, a 10-year-old from Hammonton, NJ, has Bohring Opitz Syndrome, a genetic disorder affecting her growth and development. Despite her condition, Gwenyth’s joy for music and water is contagious. With the foundation’s support, her home now has a mechanical lift, making it easier for her family to care for her.

William Cooper Jr., age 6, from Pine Hill, NJ, lives with STXBP1, a rare developmental and epilepsy disorder. Known for his love of family and his favorite show, On Patrol: Live, William now has a safe, accessible way to travel to medical appointments, thanks to the foundation’s support of repairs to the family’s wheelchair accessible van.

Carl Pelo, a lively 7-year-old from Gloucester City, NJ, was born with hydrocephalus, causing fluid buildup in the brain. Carl enjoys Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, swimming, and Halloween. The adaptive van his family received through the foundation’s partnership with the state’s Catastrophic Illness in Children Relief Fund has transformed his daily experiences. Carl’s family also won the luncheon’s raffle prize of $1,500 adding a bit of extra joy to the day.

Larissa Garcia, a 19-year-old from Budd Lake, NJ, has Trisomy 13, a rare chromosomal disorder. Known for her radiant smile, Larissa brightened everyone’s day as her story was shared. The foundation’s support has helped her family focus on providing Larissa with a fulfilling life.

One of the most moving moments was the presentation of the Zoey Award to Xavier Blanco, a 9-year-old from West Milford, NJ. Xavier, known for his playful charm and love of Disney, was awarded a 2019 wheelchair-accessible van, easing the physical strain on his family and giving him new mobility. The video reveal of the van brought many to tears as the community celebrated this transformative gift.

The luncheon also highlighted a need for ongoing support as the foundation plans future projects. These include a handicap-accessible bedroom and bathroom for Anabelle Araya, a 15-year-old from Dumont, NJ, who lives with cerebral palsy, cortical visual impairment, and global developmental delay. Anabelle can play several musical instruments and loves spending time on her family’s deck. With the foundation’s backing, Anabelle’s family looks forward to a home that can better meet her needs.

The Spring Lake Hope Foundation’s Eighth Annual Luncheon was a powerful reminder of what can be achieved when a community comes together. “We have achieved so much, but there is still much more to be done,” Laurenzi stated. “Thanks to your generosity, we can continue to bring hope and relief to families in need.”
