In the past the gala has paid a poignant tribute to Zoey Komninos, a cherished Spring Lake Toys Foundation lil’ hero who tragically passed away on December 30, 2021. Zoey’s sixteen-year battle with severe health issues touched many hearts. In her honor, the foundation introduced the Zoey Award, which was presented to Isaia in the form of a Freedom Concepts adaptable bike to aid in his mobility.

Other lil’ heroes celebrated at the event included Killian, recipient of an adaptable car seat, and Paula, who received a mechanical lift. The event also highlighted the challenges faced by the Santucci family, who have three sons diagnosed with leukodystrophy. The foundation has been actively involved in renovating the family’s Fair Lawn residence to enhance its space and wheelchair accessibility.

One of our honored guests this year is Sky Mendoza. A courageous young woman whose life took an unexpected turn after a devastating car accident claimed the life of her pregnant stepmother and left Sky paralyzed from the neck down. Currently, the Spring Lake Toys Foundation in partnership with the City of Middletown are working together to build a new home with all the comforts and accessibility to handle Sky’s day-to-day challenges. A momentous undertaking that would not be possible without the aid of dozens of volunteers and sponsors.
